marmite (/ˈmɑrmaɪt/ mar-myt) is made from yeast extract, a by-product of beer brewing. this sticky uber-salty dark brown food paste was invented in the late 19th century when german scientist justus von liebig discovered that brewer's yeast could be concentrated, bottled, & eaten. it's very low in sugar, low in calories, contains no saturated fat, completely vegetarian, & full of vitamin B12! when i was a kid, one of my favorite drinks was marmite in hot water, while other kids enjoyed spreading their toasts with this thick-ass brown goo. yum
